Configuring your Linksys Router is a two step process which is physically setup of the router and configure the router’s settings. The Linksys Router Configuration is very simple and easy process and can be done manually. You are not even required the installation CD or other additional software like Cisco Connect for configuration of the Linksys router.
Ensure to connect the router to the modem using Ethernet cables and router to the computer and open the configuration page and change the settings manually. This is that simple isn’t it? But, you need to ensure that for setup and configuration of the Linksys Router you need to connect the router using Ethernet Cable, even if the router is wireless. Below is the step by step tutorial on Linksys Router Configuration.
Step 1 – Physical Setup & Connection
You first need to set your Linksys router close to the modem and plug-in the power cable into the wall socket. Power up the router and then connect the router with the modem using the Ethernet cable. Now connect the computer with the router using the numbered ports of the router for the setup and configuration process. Even if the router is wireless, you must prefer developing the connection between the system and router using LAN cable, until the security settings are configured into your router.
Step 2 – Cloning the MAC Address
The second step of the configuration process is to clone the MAC Address. The cable internet connections basically demand Media Access Control or MAC address so as to determine the computer of the subscribers and establish a secure connection. So, if the internet connection in your Linksys Router also requires the computer’s MAC address, then the router would have a MAC Cloning tool so as to copy the MAC address of your computer.
Now launch your preferred web browser on your PC once the connection is developed. Enter 192.168.1.1 in the address bar of the browser and hit Enter. The router login page will open where you need to type “admin” in the password field and click ok. Usually, the username is required in most of the models of Linksys router, but if it prompts, then ensure entering “admin” as the username of the router.
The configuration or setup page will open followed by MAC Address Clone tool. Right on the Mac Address Clone tab you need to click on “Enabled” button and then click on “Clone My PC’s Mac” button so as to copy the Mac address of your PC. Once it copies and enters the Mac Address number you need to click on “Save Settings” button to save the cloned Mac Address.
Step 3 – SSID Settings
Hiding or changing the default SSID of your router is always helpful in deterring the uninvited users from using the wireless connection of your Linksys Router.
Click on “Wireless” from the main menu page and click on “Wireless Network Name” button. Here you need to enter the required Network’s SSID, the name that will appear in wireless network list of your device and you can easily recognize the modem or router through this name. After entering the name, you need to “Disable” the radio button for the “Wireless SSID Broadcast” and then click on “Save Settings” and you are done.
Step 4 – Security Settings
On the Wireless Menu, you will see the “Wireless Security” tab from where you need to choose the WEP option from the drop down menu of Security Mode. Ensure choosing 126 bits 26 hex digits from drop down menu and enter the password in the required field. Ensure that the password is strong and comprises symbols, numerical numbers and a mix of lower and upper case letters. If you think that the password is difficult to remember, then note down the password for future use. Click on “Generate” and finally on “Save Settings”. You are done with the process.
Once you are done with the configuration process of Linksys Router, it is the time to check for the connection. If the connection is not established, then go through the Linksys Router Configuration process again and double check that the settings are saved as intended for developing a connection and uses the router for internet connections.
